The 2025 Othello Sandhill Crane Festival is just around the corner! Mark your calendars for March 21-23 and join us in Othello, Washington, for a weekend celebrating the remarkable spring migration of Sandhill Cranes. This year’s theme, Flyways and By-Ways, highlights the intricate journeys of migratory birds and the landscapes that support them.
The Columbia Basin Conservation District (CBCD) is proud to be part of this exciting event! Our team will be on-site throughout the festival, ready to connect with the community and share information about conservation programs that support wildlife, habitat restoration, and sustainable land management.
Join us for a guided hike and informative lecture on Saturday, March 22. CBCD’s Conservation Biologist, Kaley Wisher, and Conservation Director, Dinah Rouleau, will lead two engaging sessions to explore the natural wonders of the Columbia Basin.
Flora and Fauna of the Columbia Basin Lecture
Time: 9:00 AM
Kaley and Dinah will lead an informative presentation about native plant taxonomy, physiology, and the wildlife that call these plants home. This lecture will highlight key native host plants for invertebrates and mammal forage.
Flora and Fauna of the Columbia Basin Hike
Time: 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Meeting Point: Winchester Wasteway South
Cost: $25.00
Join Kaley and Dinah for an immersive hike through native upland and riparian habitats. This easy-to-moderate, 2-mile hike will help participants identify key plant and animal species of the Columbia Basin. The hike is designed to complement the Flora and Fauna lecture, providing a hands-on experience with the region’s diverse ecology.
Throughout the festival, CBCD staff will be available at our booth to answer questions about conservation initiatives and cost-share programs that benefit local landowners and the environment. Stop by to learn how we can work together to preserve the natural beauty of the Columbia Basin!
The Othello Sandhill Crane Festival holds special meaning for CBCD, thanks to the dedication of Marie Lotz, our conservation district’s former manager. Marie coordinated the festival for many years and her legacy continues to be celebrated through this annual gathering.
