Cost Share Options Available for Mobile Drip Irrigation

Mobile Drip Irrigation (MDI) is an innovative technology being introduced in the Columbia Basin. MDI has been shown to effectively reduce evaporation losses and improve saturation in the targeted root zone. A recent report from Kansas State University indicated that using MDI during the early stages of crop development led to a 35% reduction in evaporation from bare soil and crop canopies compared to traditional spray nozzle systems.

Left: MDI lines hang directly from the pivot, delivering water closer to the soil surface for improved efficiency and reduced evaporation. Right: MDI applies water slowly and evenly across the field, helping reduce runoff, improve soil moisture, and support more efficient water use.

In addition to minimizing evaporation, MDI improves infiltration, which can lower disease pressure associated with moist canopy conditions. This technology also has the potential to decrease energy costs, especially for wells with reduced capacities. As MDI gains popularity, the Columbia Basin Conservation District (CBCD) has established a program to provide cost-share assistance.
